Para Completion - Complete Guide for SSC, Banking and Railway Exams

Para Completion is an important topic in English comprehension for competitive exams like SSC CGL, SSC CHSL, Railway, Banking and CTET. In this type of question, a paragraph is given with one sentence missing. Four options are given and you have to choose the sentence which completes the paragraph logically and grammatically. It tests your understanding of paragraph flow, context, theme and linking.

Important Fact: Para Completion questions carry 1-2 marks in SSC CGL English and 2-3 marks in Banking exams. The missing sentence can be opening sentence, middle sentence or closing sentence. To solve, first identify main idea of para, tone, and linking words before and after blank. Practice of connectors is key.

1. Para Completion Basics and Opening and Closing Sentence Selection

Opening sentence selection is when first sentence is missing. Opening sentence should introduce theme independently without pronouns like he, she, they, it, this, that referring to previous idea. Closing sentence selection is when last sentence is missing. Closing sentence should conclude para logically and should not introduce new idea. It should give final thought or summary.

2. Contextual Understanding and Logical Continuation

Contextual understanding means understanding overall meaning and situation of paragraph. Logical continuation means chosen sentence should continue logically from previous sentence and lead smoothly to next sentence. Check tense continuity, pronoun reference, subject continuity and idea continuity. For example, if previous sentence says cause, next should be effect.

Type of BlankWhat to CheckExample Connector
Opening SentenceIndependent introduction, no pronoun referenceNowadays, In ancient times
Middle SentenceLink with previous and next sentenceHowever, Therefore, Moreover
Closing SentenceConclusion, summary, final resultThus, Hence, In conclusion
Cause and EffectCause before effect logicallyBecause, Due to, As a result
Contrast and ComparisonOpposite idea or similar ideaOn the other hand, Similarly
Inference BasedLogical conclusion from given factsIt can be inferred, This shows

3. Main Idea and Theme and Linking Words and Connectors

Every paragraph has main idea and theme. Missing sentence must match theme. Linking words and connectors like however, therefore, moreover, furthermore, on the other hand, similarly, because, although are very important clues. They show contrast, addition, cause, effect and comparison. Always notice connector before blank and after blank to choose correct option.

4. Cause and Effect, Contrast and Comparison, Inference and Vocabulary Based Completion

Cause and Effect para shows reason and result. Contrast shows opposite ideas and comparison shows similar ideas. Inference-based completion requires logical deduction from given information. Vocabulary-based completion checks contextual vocabulary meaning. For vocabulary, check tone - positive, negative, neutral and choose word matching tone of paragraph. Read full para twice before choosing answer.

Exam Tip: To solve para completion quickly, find subject chain, pronoun chain, tense consistency and connector chain. Eliminate options that introduce new topic or contradict tone. The correct option will maintain same subject and logical flow.

To master para completion, read newspaper editorials daily, practice linking words, improve vocabulary and solve previous year SSC and Banking para completion questions. Focus on logical flow rather than grammar only. This will help you score full marks in comprehension section.
